In casual conversation with an atheist, this almost always comes up. They pretend to think “If there is a God, He must be all loving and will accept me into heaven either way.”
Or sometimes (okay, most times 😏) you’ll run into a demon disguised as an atheist (their tell is they always badmouth Jesus and God), yet they love to lead souls astray with lies such as these- “You can do no wrong” or “It’s all about the experience!”. Sounds a lot like “Do as thou wilt!” Doesn’t it!?
Nowhere in scripture does it ever say that God is “all-loving” or that He is obliged to love all things—or even all living beings, including people—unconditionally.
Neither is it a rational necessity that His being all powerful means He must do all things within His capacity. Because I have the capacity to do a thousand push-ups a day doesn’t oblige me to do so. On what principle do you demand an all-powerful God do something because you personally think He ought to (provided he exists—which, atheists don’t even believe to begin with)?
The scriptures plainly state that there are things God HATES. Even people. His default position is that of love. That’s why He creates and gives life. That is an act of love. And His ultimate purpose for creating living things is a loving relationship.
But, being all-wise, He knows that forced love is not love at all. What’s more, He doesn’t only seek the love of His creations for Himself—He also wants them all to love one another, and to treat one another according His eternal law of love.
That’s because He plans to give to His children (humans who have been born into His own family) the entire universe to enjoy for all eternity. And the only way for there to be pure joy is for all hate and evil to be completely and permanently eradicated from His universe.
Sure, having all power, He could have created us all with a built-in (and, I submit, artificial) penchant for loving one another.
But God is not one-faceted. He isn’t just some kind of cosmic power source. He is also infinite mind and therefore has infinite wisdom. And in His wisdom He has decreed that love must be chosen against the capacity not to love.
The same is true with goodness. For genuine goodness to exist in a created being, it must also have the capacity for evil. Hence, the devil—who (even most atheists know) was according to scripture, once the perfect pinnacle of God’s creations.
Finally, God is also sovereign. Which means—combined with being all-wise—He and He alone has the prerogative and intelligence to judge what’s ultimately best for all things under His power. Which includes humans whose minds He created—even those who think they know better how He should achieve his own purposes better than He does.
Even hypothetically (as is the case of every unbeliever), it’s irrational to suppose that a being with a mind can know better than the being who created their mind.
His ways are above our ways, His thoughts are above our thoughts. He is real, and He’s waiting for you. Trust in Jesus, you have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. You will not be disappointed, that much I can promise you! God Bless You and Yours.
